Community Groups

Love God. Love People.

Here at FCC, we believe that Community Groups are an essential part of your faith journey. We are a church OF Community Groups, not just a church WITH Community Groups. The end of Acts chapter 2 gives us a glimpse of how the early church operated. Acts 2:42 says, “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.” This is exactly what we do in Community Groups.

Community groups provide a safe space where you can bring all of life’s burdens and bare them together. It is a time of Biblical discussion, accountability, and ultimately a place where you can do life together with other believers. If you want to connect with your church family on a deeper level and see God bless your life in ways you can’t imagine, then Community Groups are for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Community Group look like?

We believe thriving spiritually happens best in Community Groups. A Community Group is made up of 12-15 people who meet weekly at a group members house or other designated location.

It is in a Community Group where you study God’s Word together and are in a setting in which you can tackle the tough questions and challenges of life together. You will find Community Groups to be a comfortable place where you can connect and share life with the members of your group.

How much of my time is this going to take?

Community Group meetings last approximately 1.5 hours each. As Community Group members begin to develop community, they most likely will want to spend even more time together. There is always time for prayer and sharing of life issues where others in your group can help you walk through life and not be alone.

What are we going to do with our children during Community Group?

There are designated Community Groups that have childcare available. Generally, members of that group will either have one of their older children watch the younger kiddos in another room or the group chips in to provide a babysitter each week.

Will there be homework?

Most Community Group studies will not have mandatory homework, although it is highly encouraged to continue reading your Bible, praying, and growing deeper in your personal faith journey throughout the week.

Am I going to have to talk or can I just sit and listen during meetings?

Community Groups are like family – sometimes you talk, sometimes you listen. No one is forced to talk or to lead the group. As the group develops, people become much more comfortable. We have discovered that people who seldom speak up in large groups will talk in Community Groups.

Will I have to pray out loud?

No. Again, you are allowed to move, grow, at your own pace. When you want to share a prayer concern or pray out loud, you will be encouraged to do so.

Who else is going to be in the group?

Community Groups are made up of people from First Church of Christ, as well as friends, neighbors or acquaintances of people in the group. Each Community Group leader is someone who is deeply involved in First Church of Christ.

How much do I have to know about the Bible?

None. Community Groups are all about learning the Bible, not debating it or being tested on it. Each group goes through a curriculum that is designated by the staff at FCC to help you grow deeper in your faith.

How many weeks or months is this group going to last?

Community Group is like family, some have been meeting for years, and others are starting something fresh. At First Church of Christ, our goal is to constantly multiply each group by growing up leaders from within the group and sending them out to start a new group. This process can take a few months, or years.

If I don’t like it, can I leave without people being mad at me?

We want you to find a group that you will thrive in. We understand that this just doesn’t happen sometimes. That’s okay! We rarely see this happen, but if it does, please reach out to your group leader and they can get you in touch with the right people.
